BBC: Banned Book Club

Chapter 2 of the Banned Book Club

100 Boyfriends by Brontez Purnell

This provocative, unflinching book dives into themes of love, heartbreak, sex, and survival within the Black queer experience. Purnell’s bold storytelling and razor-sharp wit invite readers on a raw and emotional ride, making 100 Boyfriends not only a literary force but also a necessary conversation starter.

With 100 Boyfriends, we knew we had to do more than flip through pages; we had to feel the heartbeat of these stories and bring their energy into our community. That’s why we’re elevating this book club experience, creating spaces where ideas flow, identities are celebrated, and conversations dig deeper.

Reclaiming Our Stories, One Page at a Time

The Banned Book Club (BBC) is a groundbreaking initiative by Dear Black Gay Men, designed to honor and preserve Black queer narratives. This is more than just a book club—it’s a movement to protect our history, and connect about our humanity through literature.

The Banned Book Club is here for anyone committed to uplifting Black queer voices. Together, we examine the texts, share our lived experiences, and build a powerful collective of readers and thinkers who refuse to be silenced.

Why The Banned Book Club Matters

For generations, Black queer stories have been marginalized, erased, or rewritten. From the AIDS epidemic to the ongoing censorship of our lives and art, the fight to protect our narratives continues. With political efforts targeting LGBTQ+ representation in libraries and schools, the battle has never been more urgent.

BBC seeks to meet those challenges head-on by providing a space to engage with the voices of Black LGBTQIA+ authors who inspire us to think critically, love deeply, and act boldly.

By participating in the Banned Book Club, you’re not just reading a book—you’re becoming a custodian of history and a champion for the visibility of Black queer lives.
